Starting children off at the right age is the key element to
the success of their lessons. You may hear 'the sooner the better' but this
attitude can actually backfire. If a child is put in lessons too soon they may
feel overwhelmed, frustrated and want to stop all together. The following are
guidelines we have found to be successful in determining how young a child can
start taking music lessons.
Private 30 Minute Classes
At our school, 5 years is the youngest age that we start
children in private piano lessons. At this age they have begun to develop longer
attention spans and can retain material with ease. Independent study of musical
notes will be expected in addition to classroom learning.
Voice Lessons:
Private 30 Minute Classes
7 years old is recommended as the youngest age for private
lessons. Due to the physical nature of voice lessons (proper breathing
techniques, development of the vocal cords and lung capacity), a younger body is
generally not ready for the rigors of vocal technique.
Children's Choir:
45 Minute Classes
If your child has a keen desire to start music, a children's
choir class will give them a good foundation in music basics which will be
helpful in later private lessons. We offer a children's choir for kindergarten
through fifth grade. For the 5-6 year old, private lessons generally do not
work as the child has not yet experienced the formal learning environment which
aids in more effective learning. This class teaches them how to use their voices
properly, in a fun, relaxed environment.
